The Burien Arts Association and Humanities Washington invite the community to an engaging conversation with Amanda Wilde, a member of the 2012-14 Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau. This free event takes place Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Burien Arts Gallery, 826 S.W. 152nd St. in Burien.
About this program
What do Bing, Jimi, and Kurt have in common? The music of artistic giants and Washington sons Bing Crosby, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain spans generations. Their music belongs to us all. Washington state holds the unique position of being ‘on the edge of the world’ from both musical and geographic standpoints. This placement provided a rich breeding ground for three distinct and revolutionary artists who pushed artistic and technological limits to forge new musical and cultural territory. In this captivating presentation, musical journalist Amanda Wilde highlights unusual and universal themes and threads that weave three distinct artists with three groundbreaking musical eras: the 1930s, the 1960s and the 1990s. Along the way she will show how they have influenced the technology, business, and notoriety of Washington state.
About Amanda Wilde
Radio host and producer Amanda Wilde is known for her eclectic knowledge of music and her interviews. Wilde was a key figure in the development of cutting-edge Seattle music station KEXP, hosting its afternoon drive show for 12 years. For an ever-increasing global audience, she highlights musical connections and unravels the cultural threads that weave style, artist, and era together. In 2003, Wilde joined KUOW where she hosts and produces the acclaimed music program The Swing Years and Beyond. Her work continues to be recognized with awards, grants, and fellowships, for her interviews, documentaries and oral history works. In 2014, Seattle Women in Jazz presented Wilde with the first annual Amanda Wilde Inspire Award for outstanding contributions to the jazz community.
About Burien Arts Association
The mission of Burien Arts Association is to engage, enrich and entertain all the communities, generations and visitors to the Burien and Greater Highline area through creative and innovative arts programming. The non-profit was founded in the 1960s and for years operated a gallery in the little blue house at Dottie Harper Park.In fall 2013, Burien Arts Association opened the only fine-arts gallery between Tacoma and West Seattle in Olde Burien at 826 S.W. 152nd St. Burien Arts Association programming also includes the delicious Strawberry Shortcake booth at Burien’s annual Wild Strawberry Festival in June, summer Shakespeare in the Park, Vision 20/20 Fundraising Art Event, Highline Classic Jazz Festival, face painting at local festivals and student workshops.
